Dottie vs Cozi: which family organizer fits your family?
Updated 6 min read
Quick answer
Pick Cozi if you want a free shared calendar, shopping and to-do lists, a meal planner and a recipe box in one app, and you’re happy to type events in. Pick Dottie if the hard part is the dates buried in school and team emails: it reads them and texts you to confirm before adding them to Google Calendar. Dottie needs access to your email; Cozi doesn’t.
Cozi and Dottie both promise to get a busy family on the same page, but they go about it in opposite ways. Cozi is an app where your family keeps its calendar, lists and meals. Dottie is an assistant you text that goes looking for the dates in the email you already get. Which one fits depends on where your schedule actually lives today.
The short version
- Cozi is a place you put things. You (or anyone in the family) add events, shopping items, to-dos and meals, and everyone sees them in the app.
- Dottie is someone you ask. It reads school, team and activity emails, flyer photos you text it and calendar feeds you give it, then texts you to confirm before anything goes on your Google Calendar.
Plenty of families would be well served by Cozi alone. If your calendar is already up to date and the hard part is remembering milk, Cozi is the simpler answer.

What Cozi does well
Cozi has been the default family organizer for a long time, and it earns that. Its home page lists a shared, color-coded calendar, shopping lists, to-do lists, a meal planner and a recipe box, all on the phone and the computer.
- It’s free to start. The free version “includes most Cozi features and is supported by ads and sponsors.”
- Room for the whole family. Cozi lets you add up to 12 members, each with their own name and color.
- Meals and recipes. According to the FAQ, the Meal Planner is in the mobile apps, and you can save recipes from Cozi’s collections or add your own by URL or by hand. Dottie has nothing like this.
- Agenda emails and reminders. Cozi can send daily or weekly agenda emails and push or email reminders for events.
- No email access needed. Cozi never needs to read your inbox. For some families that settles it.
Cozi free vs Cozi Gold
As of October 2026, Cozi’s FAQ says Cozi Gold costs $39 USD per year, and one subscription covers everyone in the account on all their devices. The Cozi Gold page lists what it adds:
- No ads
- Month view on mobile
- Calendar search
- Up to three reminders per event (the free version gets one per attendee)
- Calendar change notifications for the family
- A birthday tracker
- Shopping mode, where checked items drop to the bottom of the list
How events get into Cozi
Mostly, someone types them in, on the app or at my.cozi.com. Cozi can also pull in other calendars: in Settings, under Connected Calendars, you choose Add a calendar from a URL and paste an iCal link, such as a school or sports team calendar. Cozi’s guide to using Cozi with other calendars says changes in the original calendar show up in Cozi within about an hour.
That works well when the school or team publishes a calendar feed. It doesn’t help with the things that only arrive by email: the newsletter that mentions early dismissal in paragraph six, the coach’s note that practice moved, the permission slip due Friday. Those still need a person to read them and type them in.
How Dottie gets events in
Dottie starts from the other end. You connect your email (Gmail, or iCloud or Outlook mail), and during setup it looks at who sends you school, sports and activity email and suggests senders to watch. You confirm which ones. From then on it reads those emails for dates, forms and changes.
You can also text it a photo of a flyer or schedule, or give it a school calendar page or a team’s iCal link to watch. When it finds something new, it texts you and asks before adding it. A thumbs-up is a yes. Events go onto your Google Calendar; iCloud and Outlook calendars are read-only to Dottie.
Beyond the calendar, it sends a short morning briefing, a Sunday week-ahead, alerts for things like closures and schedule changes, and reminders you ask for. You can ask “where did you hear that?” and it names the email, calendar or page.
Where each one is better
Cozi is better if you want…
- A full app with a calendar you can browse, not just a text thread
- Meal planning and a recipe box
- A free option, or a low yearly price for the extras
- A tool that never needs to read your email
- A calendar the whole family edits directly from their own phones or a computer
Dottie is better if you want…
- Dates pulled out of school and team emails without you retyping them
- To check the schedule by asking a question in Messages
- A heads-up on changes, forms and due dates you didn’t know to look for
- Nothing new to install on anyone’s phone
Can you use both?
Yes. Dottie adds confirmed events to your Google Calendar, and Cozi can subscribe to a Google Calendar by its iCal link through Connected Calendars. So Dottie can handle the email reading while Cozi stays the family’s app for lists, meals and the shared view. Expect the same roughly hourly refresh Cozi describes for any connected calendar.
Quick way to decide
- Most of your events already reach your calendar? Cozi, free version first.
- Meal planning matters to you? Cozi.
- Dates keep slipping through school and team emails? Dottie, or Dottie alongside Cozi.
- Not comfortable granting email access? Cozi.
- Nobody in the family will open another app? Dottie, since it’s just texts.
