How to set up Skyward and PowerSchool notifications

Updated 5 min read

Quick answer

In Skyward Family Access, click My Account at the top right and use the Email Notifications section near the bottom. In the PowerSchool parent portal, click Email Notification in the left menu, tick what you want (grades, attendance, announcements, balance alerts) and pick a frequency from daily to monthly. Your district decides which options appear, so your menus may differ.

Skyward and PowerSchool are where your district keeps the official record: grades, attendance, lunch balances. Most parents log in when a report card comes out or when something already went wrong. Both systems will email you before that point, but only if you turn it on.

One caveat up front. Your school district sets these systems up, not the vendor, and it decides which options you see. Skyward says it plainly: because every district is different, some areas may not be visible or available to you. PowerSchool’s help notes the same about links your school enables (PowerSchool). If a menu below is missing, that’s usually why.

PowerSchool parent portal: Email Notification

PowerSchool’s settings live on one page, and the official help is specific about every option (PowerSchool). These steps are for the web portal.

Menu names vary a little by school and by app version, so look for the closest match if a step doesn’t line up exactly.

  1. Open the page. From the start page, click Email Notification in the navigation menu.
  2. Check the account email. Notifications, account recovery notices and account-change confirmations all go to the Account Email. Make sure it’s one you read.
  3. Pick what you want. Under What information would you like to receive, the choices are: Summary of Current Grades and Attendance; Detail Report Showing Assignment Scores for Each Class; Detail Report of Attendance; School Announcements; and Balance Alert.
  4. Add the other parent. Additional Notification Emails takes more addresses, separated by commas. Handy if only one parent has the login.
  5. Set How Often. Options are Never, Daily (every weekday), Weekly (every Monday), Every Two Weeks (first and third Monday) and Monthly (first Monday).
  6. Apply to everyone. Tick Apply These Settings to All Your Students? if you have more than one child, then Submit. There’s also a Send Now box if you want a report immediately to see what it looks like.

A practical starting point:

If you want…TickHow often
A light check-in for a kid who’s doing fineSummary of Current Grades and AttendanceWeekly
To catch missing work earlySummary, plus Detail Report Showing Assignment ScoresWeekly
To catch an unexpected absence fastDetail Report of AttendanceDaily
To never be surprised by a negative lunch balanceBalance AlertWeekly

Because frequency is one setting for the whole page, you can’t have daily attendance and weekly grades at the same time. Pick the frequency that suits the most important item. Daily on everything gets noisy quickly; weekly on Mondays is a good default.

Some schools also post a daily School Bulletin in the portal (only if your school turns it on). It isn’t a calendar feed, but it’s worth a glance during a week with events.

Skyward Family Access: My Account

Skyward’s own public help is mostly short videos, and the detailed email settings are documented by districts, so the steps below come from district guides. Expect small differences in yours.

  1. Sign in on the web. Use your district’s Family Access link. Skyward notes each district has its own login portal (Skyward), and your school or district handles password resets and account creation (Skyward).
  2. Open My Account. It’s at the top right, next to your name (Georgetown ISD).
  3. Check your email and phone. Update them on the Account Settings page.
  4. Set Email Notifications. Near the bottom, check the notifications you want and set their frequency, then Save. Districts commonly offer food service balance, grade progress and attendance notifications, for all or selected students (Georgetown ISD, Pearland ISD).

Skyward’s mobile app also offers push notifications. Skyward describes them as alerts “for everything from missing assignments to food service balances” (Skyward), and lists attendance alerts among the core Family Access features (Skyward). If you turn push on, consider leaving email at a weekly summary so you aren’t told the same thing twice.

Calendars

Skyward Family Access has a calendar for important dates, from tests and due dates to field trips and sporting events (Skyward). On districts using Skyward’s newer Qmlativ system, Skyward’s parent video is titled “How Parents Use, Sync, and Export the Calendar”, so look for a sync or export option there. We couldn’t confirm the exact menu names from a public text source, and availability depends on your district.

PowerSchool’s parent help doesn’t describe a calendar subscription for families. In most districts, the school calendar lives on the district website instead, often as a page or a calendar link you can subscribe to.

Before the first progress report

  • Logged in on the web at least once, and the account email is one you read.
  • PowerSchool: grades summary and attendance ticked, Apply to all students on, frequency set.
  • Skyward: My Account, then Email Notifications checked and saved.
  • Other parent added (PowerSchool’s Additional Notification Emails, or their own login).
  • Push or email for each alert, not both.
  • A filter so these emails skip Promotions and land somewhere you look.
  • District calendar subscribed, or its page saved.

How Dottie fits in

Dottie doesn’t connect to Skyward or PowerSchool. It reads what they send to your connected email, and it can watch a calendar feed or page you give it, like your district’s calendar. Push notifications from the Skyward or PowerSchool apps go to your phone, so Dottie never sees those.

That makes the email settings above worth turning on even if you use the apps. A balance alert or an attendance email in your inbox is something Dottie can read and you can ask it about, and a district calendar page it’s watching is how new no-school days and early releases reach you: it texts you about new dates and asks before adding them to your Google Calendar.

Dottie, watch the district calendar page: [link]Got it. I found 3 dates not on your calendar yet: no school Nov 3 and Nov 26–28, and early release Dec 19. Want me to add them?👍
An example exchange

Grades and attendance are private matters, so it’s worth knowing who can see what. Each person’s email stays private to them in Dottie; the privacy page explains how. For more on turning school email into calendar entries, see how to get school emails onto your calendar.
